Orvin Hershel “Bud” Rupe, age 93, a longtime resident of Joplin, MO, died October 7, 2018, at the Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, KS.

He was born December 21, 1924, in Grady, NM, the son of Emmett Coen and Sarah Gertrude Lottie (Harless) Rupe. He attended school in Grady and graduated from Grady High School in 1941.

He served in the United States Navy from January 1944 until his honorable discharge in January 1946. Bud then earned his BS in Business Economics from Eastern New Mexico University in 1949. On November 22, 1961, he married Dorothy A. Kinzie in Portales, NM, and they remained inseparable in their love and life until his passing.

Bud worked for Clovis Oil Company for over 25 years. In Clovis, Bud taught Sunday School and coached many youth sport teams. He also worked several years in the ethanol production industry before moving to Midland, TX, where he was employed by Texas instruments until his retirement in 1995. Soon after, Bud and Dorothy moved to Joplin, MO, and began a new life. Then in August 2018, Bud and Dorothy moved to Westmoreland, KS, to be closer to family.

He was a member of College Heights Christian Church in Joplin, MO. He along with Dorothy were active in many volunteer roles at the church, including Prime Timers, Cheerleaders, ARM (American Rehabilitation Ministry) and the Joplin Senior Center.

Bud had many interests, including designing and building creative home projects. He loved spending time with his family and sharing many remarkable stories about his past. Most of all, he was kind and caring and devoted to his family. He will be forever remembered as a quiet, humble man that many looked to for a peaceful and positive outlook on life.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Rupe of Westmoreland, KS; three sons: Dean A. Miner (Colleen) of Ontario, CA; Keith Gibbons (Sharna) of Odessa, TX; Marvin Rupe (Jolene) of Manhattan, KS; and two siblings: Fern Graham of Corinth, TX; and Oliver Rupe of Amarillo; TX; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. Bud was preceded in death by his parents and by two siblings: Wallace Rupe and Edith Allen.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 29, in the Chapel at College Heights Christian Church, 4311 Newman Rd., Joplin, MO, with Pastor Rick Bushnell officiating. Entombment will be prior in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.
