Ron W. Schurman, age 68, of Joplin, Mo., passed from this life on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Mercy Hospital, Joplin. Ron was born on Dec. 13, 1949, in Atchison, Kan., and raised in Baxter Springs, Kan.
He was first employed by his father at Schurman Funeral Home, in Baxter Springs. Ron attended PSU after high school. Ron joined the National Guard, where he served for six years. Ron was owner and operator of AA Ambulance Service, in Baxter Springs, in the 1970s. Ron was later employed at St. John’s Hospital, Joplin, for a period of 30 years. During that time, he was a member of the Newton County Sheriff’s reserves, something he was proud of until his death. Ron was recently employed at Easy Living Inc. as a care taker, where he could continue being a service to his fellow man.
Ron is survived by daughter, Monica Fleming (Mike), Leawood, Kan.; granddaughters, Anna and Josie Fleming, of Leawood; brothers, Richard Schurman (Becky), and Randy Schurman (Bonnie), of Joplin; sister, Roxie Schurman, of Tulsa, Okla.; along with many nieces, nephews, great- nieces, and cousins. Ron’s parents, Kenneth and Carleen Schurman, preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, at St. Phillips Episcopal Church, Joplin. Burial will follow at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin. Family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-7 p.m., at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs.
